OpenAI hits $852 bn, xAI at $250 bn as India turns AI battleground

ChatGPT clocks 100 million weekly users in India as MeitY's AI labelling rules take effect from February 20, 2026.

OpenAI and xAI together command a combined valuation of $1.1 trillion, with India emerging as their largest contested market outside the United States. ChatGPT crossed 100 million weekly active users in India in February 2026, while Grok’s desktop traffic share from Indian users remains undisclosed publicly.

OpenAI closed a $122 billion funding round on March 31, 2026, lifting its valuation to $852 billion, with SoftBank co-leading alongside other firms and Amazon, Nvidia and Microsoft participating. The company reported $25 billion in annualised revenue in February 2026.

Elon Musk’s xAI was folded into SpaceX in February 2026 at a $250 billion valuation. The Grok-maker raised $20 billion in a Series E round in January 2026, backed by Valor Equity Partners and the Qatar Investment Authority.

India is OpenAI’s second-largest market globally. The user base doubled after ChatGPT Go launched in August 2025 at ₹399 per month, then turned free for all Indian users from November 4, 2025, for one year. Grok rides on X Premium+, priced at ₹2,570 per month on the web and ₹3,000 per month on mobile apps in India as of July 2025.

MeitY tightens the screws

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) notified the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Amendment Rules, 2026, effective February 20, 2026. The rules mandate clear labelling of all Synthetic Generated Information (SGI) with visible labelling and embedded metadata.

The public consultation for the SGI amendments concluded in October 2025 before the final notification on February 10, 2026. Platforms must remove flagged AI content and deepfakes within three hours of government notification.

Bengaluru pushes back

Sarvam AI is closing a $300-350 million round in April 2026 at a $1.5-1.6 billion valuation. The Bengaluru startup anchors the IndiaAI Mission and received ₹99 crore in subsidies for Nvidia GPUs. Krutrim, founded by Ola Electric’s Bhavish Aggarwal, achieved a $1 billion valuation in January 2024 after raising $50 million. The company has raised $74.9 million in total and is building foundational models plus indigenous GPU chips.
