Two women died on Sunday after a migrant boat carrying around 82 people failed during an attempted English Channel crossing from northern France to the United Kingdom, the French Maritime Prefecture of the Channel and North Sea confirmed.
The incident occurred off Hardelot beach, a few kilometers south of Boulogne-sur-Mer, in the early hours of 03 May 2026. Distress calls reached French coastguard stations around 4 am local time, triggering the deployment of a patrol vessel and a helicopter from the Le Touquet airbase.
Seventeen migrants were rescued at sea and brought ashore at Boulogne, while 65 others remained on board when the boat ran aground. Regional health services treated several for hypothermia. The two deceased women have not been identified. India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) did not respond to queries on whether any Indian nationals were among those rescued by publication time.
According to the French Interior Ministry, at least 8 migrants have died attempting Channel crossings in 2026 so far, against 82 deaths across 2024 — the deadliest year on record — and approximately 24-36 in 2025.

UK Home Office data shows over 6,000 people reached British shores in small boats between January and April 2026, a 36% decrease over the same period last year. Vietnamese, Afghan, Iranian, Eritrean and Sudanese nationals make up the largest groups, per figures released on 28 April.
Indian nationals form a small but growing share. The UK National Crime Agency’s October 2025 threat assessment recorded 257 Indian arrivals via small boats in 2024, mostly from Punjab and Haryana, routed through Serbia, Hungary and France by smuggling networks charging varying amounts — recent reports indicate prices as low as £500-£1,000 per crossing, though older figures cited €5,000-8,000.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government signed a returns agreement with France in July 2025 — the so-called “one in, one out” pilot — under which the UK has returned 312 migrants to France as of April end. The Refugee Council says the pact has failed to deter crossings.
For India, the diaspora dimension is sharpening. The Punjab government’s NRI Affairs Department has flagged 41 missing-persons cases linked to European smuggling routes since January 2025. The MEA issued a fresh advisory on 22 April 2026 warning against irregular migration agents charging up to ₹45 lakh per Europe-UK package.
French prosecutors in Boulogne have opened a manslaughter probe and are tracing the smuggling network behind Sunday’s launch. A joint UK-France ministerial meeting on Channel security is scheduled for 14 May 2026 in Calais, with returns data and coastal patrol funding on the agenda.
