TMC Names Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay Opposition Leader, Firhad Hakeem Chief Whip

Trinamool Congress (TMC) named Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay as Leader of the Opposition and Firhad Hakeem as Chief Whip in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, formalising the party’s legislative structure after its defeat in the 2026 assembly election, in which it won 80 of 294 seats and became the main opposition party.

Chattopadhyay, a ten-term legislator from the Ballygunge constituency and former state Power and Non-Conventional Energy Sources Minister, will lead TMC’s floor operations. Hakeem, sitting Mayor of Kolkata since December 2021 (and previously from 2018–2020) and MLA from Kolkata Port, takes charge of attendance and voting discipline across the party’s assembly bloc.

Why these appointments matter

Chattopadhyay brings three decades of legislative experience — a deliberate choice of institutional credibility over fresh optics. His record as a negotiator carries weight precisely because TMC occupies the Opposition benches facing a ruling BJP with 207 seats.

With 80 seats, TMC is the main opposition, and Hakeem’s role will be crucial for managing party discipline against the ruling BJP’s supermajority. His track record running Kolkata’s municipal corporation makes him suited to what is effectively a large-scale coordination role.

The pairing also carries deliberate coalition signalling. Chattopadhyay is Hindu; Hakeem is Muslim. Both are senior Kolkata-based figures. In a state where communal consolidation shaped the 2021 and 2026 campaigns, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s choice of this pairing speaks directly to TMC’s urban base.

A transformed assembly

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as the ruling party, seeing its tally rise from 77 seats in 2021 to 207 seats in 2026. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) is now the single-largest opposition party with 80 seats. The remaining 87 opposition seats are distributed across the Left Front and the Indian National Congress (INC). No opposition bloc beyond TMC holds enough seats to mount a unified legislative challenge, making Chattopadhyay’s role as floor leader more consequential than the seat arithmetic suggests.

What happens next

The West Bengal Legislative Assembly’s first session of the new term is expected before the end of May 2026. Both appointments will be formally recognised at the first sitting, when the Speaker reads party whip notifications into the record. Chattopadhyay’s first substantive outing in the role is expected to be TMC’s response to the motion of thanks on the Governor’s address.
